Lazy Blogger

These days, working at a job I really enjoy, Spanish language immersion classes, kicking it up a notch with the exercising, podcasting and of course, eating, keeps me so busy I barely have any time or energy to blog here anymore.

I forgot that it was out of frustration with past jobs that drove me to blog in the first place, so now I’m having to search for inspiration elsewhere. What high-class problems I have these days!

UPDATE: For those of you just tuning in, I ate an INSANE amount of beef stroganoff  at a Brazilian restaurant for lunch and at 7:35 p.m. and am struggling to stay awake long enough to do my Spanish homework for tomorrow. I’ll let you know how that goesssssZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…

Last Night’s Cupcakes

Last Night's Cupcakes

Robbie came over for some Friday night dinner and chit chat. Of course, he surprised me by bringing over a half dozen GORGEOUS cupcakes he’d purchased at Sprinkles on the way. From the top right hand corner going clockwise, we have red velvet, chocolate vanilla, vanilla vanilla, lemon coconut, cinnamon and chai.

Of course, we ended up inhaling these decadent confections over a lively viewing of Obsession. You know a movie’s gonna be a classic when it’s named after a brand of perfume.

And as I always do when I have friends over, the evening devolved into me forcing Robbie to watch my favorite YouTube video clips of all time before he nearly passed out. Hope everyone else’s Friday night was as exciting!

Self Portrait in Stainless-Steel French PressBecause of my sheer brute strength, I have already accidentally destroyed two glass beakers from my Bodum French press while attempting to clean the damn things.

OK, maybe it’s not my brute strength as much as my clumsy nature that’s to blame. The first time, the beaker was precariously balancing on my dish rack–an obvious lapse in judgement on my part.

But the second time–well, I had simply turned it upside down and was giving it what I thought was a helpful pat on the bottom in an attempt to dislodge some coffee grinds when the thing just shattered in my hands.

I’m thinking it probably didn’t help that I had JUST come home from the gym after lifting weights with Keegan. Clearly, I need to either cut down on the reps or weight. I’m hulking out and my kitchenware is my first victim.

So, rather than invest in yet another replacement beaker, I decided to start making coffee in an apparatus that can take my personal brand of abuse.

I ordered the Bodum 8-glass Stainless Steel French Press and…well, you can see how happy its arrival has made me. I’ve yet to brew some coffee–as I’m still too distracted by just how PRETTY the thing is. But I’ll be sure to report back on whether or not it’s as useful as it is attractive.

Spammers Are Such Teases

I had 42 comments that I’d collected in my handy-dandy spam filter (thanks to Akismet) and decided that was the magic number which would prompt me to look through them and delete the ones that truly are just junk.

The only thing worse than getting spammed is finding yourself wishing that it was a real person telling you, “Great topic! Definitely going to check back for more posts!” or “Love the blog! Will add to my RSS!” only to find that it was sent by missexxxypantzz@hotsexynastyphilippines.net.

Bastards.

Having to scrape off those Internet barnacles from the beautiful, shiny, hull of my Goodship LisaTimmons.com is bad enough without finding myself wishing they were real.

On another note completely, I can hear my neighbors playing pool downstairs while they rock out to what appears to be some easy listening jazz. This confirms my suspicion that I will never want to move out of this building.

Biggest Loser: Team Koli

koli vs daris Biggest Loser: Team KoliJust visited The Biggest Loser online and voted for Koli for the the finale. For those of you who follow the show, here’s a good summary of where the final four ended up yesterday because I’m feeling too lazy to do a full recap of my own:

‘The Biggest Loser’: Who are you voting for, Daris or Koli? [Show Tracker L.A. Times Online]

Suffice to say, I’ve been Team Gray from pretty early on and I think the fact that Suze Orman initially predicted that Koli would be the one to take it all (until she heard that he wasn’t counting calories and then favored Sunshine as her top pick) confirms my suspicions that he would be a worthy winner.

Go Koli, with your soft-speaking, understated self!

Redesign Deconstructed

I collect free WordPress themes like most women collect shoes. Clicking that preview button to see what my content would look like dressed up in a different template gives me the kind of excitement a nerdy Carrie Bradshaw would appreciate.

Always with an eye out for that sexy new theme, I came across the Whitehouse WordPress theme by Pagelines. What I like most about it a free theme like this one, is that there’s a premium option available, if I ever decide that the one I have isn’t customizable enough. While I doubt I’ll ever have any issues that a few simple CSS style tweaks can’t fix, I’m a big fan of having the option available at the very reasonable price of $77.

It all started when I came across Jolie O’Dell’s website. She writes about social media and technology for Mashable and is using her site as a way to organize her various online portals like Twitter, Mashable, her WordPress blog, YouTube, etc. I was particularly impressed with how she’s branded the various sites with the same image and decided to steal that concept.

I began by redesigning my Twitter page with one of my favorite images of Americana, the fabulous Miss Rosie the Riveter, and incorporating that design into my website/blog. For some time now, I’ve been wanting to use WordPress like a CMS and have been thinking that upgrade to WordPress 3.0 would be the solution, since I wanted to include links in my navigation to a photo gallery, essays and various other categories of blog posts.

After doing some conceptualizing of how to organize my content, I decided to take a cue from Jolie and utilize existing external sites and simply using a plugin (Page Links To) to create links to those sites within my navigation bar.  I also figured out that I could use the plugin to link to an existing category and treat it like an external page. To wit, I’ve decided to start utilizing my Flickr pro account (free, since I’m a AT&T/Yahoo customer) for my photo gallery needs.

And voila, as it turns out, all the functionality I thought I would need from a WordPress upgrade already exists in what I’m currently using. It’s still a work in progress, but it looks like the majority of my work is been finished!

The trailer for Machete, Robert Rodriguez‘s latest venture into grindhouse cinema, is finally out and it doesn’t disappoint. The pulpy action flick stars Danny Trejo in a role tailor-made for the leathery-faced, prison-tattooed actor as he faces off with Hollywood superlative, Robert De Niro. And by tailor-made, I’m assuming his tailor used an actual machete to cut the cloth and sewed it together using cat gut and an old syringe. The guy is grizzled, in case you don’t get the picture.

In fact, the cast contains a diverse combination of young mainstream stars like Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez, those whose careers could probably stand a boost like Steven Seagal, Don Johnson and Cheech Marin. And of course, there’s Lindsay Lohan, who somehow manages to fit neatly into both categories.

While I’m excited to grab a seat in a run-down Hollywood theater for a midnight showing of this gritty flick, I’m a little bit sad that James Quall and David Liebehart won’t be making big screen cameos.

But then again, that’s what sequels are for!

Late Night Move

Tonight I am officially DONE with this last move and I couldn’t be more exhausted. Somehow, I still rustled up enough energy to write about it–I’m such a weirdo. Because I love getting back as much of my deposit as humanly possible, I made sure to fill all the holes in the walls and cleaned every nook and cranny before locking the door for the last time and dropping off the keys in the manager’s office.

I am stinky, tired and sticky and ready to slink off to the tub for a shower, although, the longer I sit here, listening to Keegan snore through the bedroom door, the more going to bed a disgusting, exhausting mess is starting to sound like a good idea. Better leave before the pull is too strong.

P.S. Totally need to revamp this thing. Stay posted for super-exciting updates.

The end of this first month of 2010 is fast approaching and it’s been a busy one. I’ve said goodbye to my job at SocialiteLife.com in favor of a new one, turned 30 years old and kicked off the decade by running a half marathon for which I sort of trained, but not really. At least, I managed to raise $950 for the event in the process. It was a ton of fun, despite the fact that the next day when I got my physical for my new job, my knee reflexes weren’t working at all. The lady tapped that little hammer on my knees with a quizzical look on her face, but I’m assuming they work now, since I feel fine.

I had a blast running, recommitting myself to this physical activity that has brought me so much pleasure and creativity for the past couple of years. Senator John McCain helped kick off the P.F. Chang Marathon with a wave and a smile and—oh yes, another new thing for this year—I took a great picture with my awesome new phone. I’m liking this new decade so far.

Last year, I remember that one of my big goals was to run more in 2009 and I’m happy to report that my NikePlus page says I ran nearly 100 miles more in 2009, than in 2008, which makes me happy. So, this year, I’m challenging myself to reach 250 miles and will do the math later to figure out how much monthly mileage that will entail. I’m kind of on the fence as to whether or not to challenge myself to the Los Angeles Marathon in March (the Run to the Sea as they are calling it), but better decide soon.

One thing for sure, though, I have to put this out there—this is the year I make the commitment to learn Spanish. I’m 30-years-old and it’s way overdue. I just wish Abuelita were still around, so she could brag to her friends.

RICHMOND HILL 2009 HOLIDAY TOUR OF HOMES

A    St. Anne Catholic Church
10550 Ford Avenue (Rte 144)

St. Anne Catholic Church was built by Henry and Clara Ford in 1936, and was originally used as a chapel for students at the high school for daily worship and non-denominational services on Sundays for the whole community. In 1955, the newly renovated chapel of St. Anne, mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was dedicated. From a small parish of five registered families and a handful of Catholic soldiers from Hinesville, it has grown to include more than 600 families.

B    Richmond Hill Historical Society & Museum
Ford Avenue (Rte 144) & Timber Trail

The school was a voluntary project of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Ford, who had a winter home in Richmond Hill. The Fords ran this school because the local school system made no provision for pre-school education at that time. It is now the Richmond Hill Historical Society Museum. Displays of the Colonial Era, Revolutionary War Era, Civil War Era and the Henry Ford Era are located here. The building is currently owned by Magnolia Manor. They have graciously allowed the Historical Society to use the building for their meetings and museum displays.

C    Home of Bob & Victoria Nickolson
80 Hickory Street

This 4,000 s.f. plantation-style home was built just this year by Mock Construction Company and sits in Hickory Hill Estates in the Richmond Hill Plantation subdivision. This home features 5 bedrooms, a bonus room, 4 1/2 bathrooms, and two huge covered porches. This is a unique open floor plan with 12’ ceilings on the first floor and 9’ interior doors. Luxury is obvious in this quality built home with granite, hardwood floors, an old-fashioned claw-foot tub in the master bath, four columns in the dining room, two in the kitchen, custom-built mantle with granite surround, custom bookcases in the family room, all custom wood shelving in the closets with automatic lighting; the list goes on and on. The trim in this house is exceptional, with 13” baseboards, and layered crown molding everywhere. Tray ceilings and rounded corners add so much charm to this beautiful home. Gas lights on the front and back porches create a warm, welcoming feeling. The owners enjoy sitting on the porch for morning coffee and watching the hummingbirds, and in the evening, the sound of crickets adds a peaceful note to the quiet atmosphere.

D    Home of Ryan & Paige Glazer
130 Bark Branch Road

The newly constructed cottage-style home of Ryan and Paige Glazer is located in the new Richmond Hill Plantation subdivision. The master-planned community was designed by Johnny Murphy with the intent to combine historical architecture with modern day practicality and luxury. Built by Saturday & Warnock Construction, this four-bedroom cottage is reminiscent of the style of the Henry Ford era.
The owners both grew up in Richmond Hill and have a true love for all things coastal. The greens and browns of the nearby marshes and river banks provided inspiration for the colors used throughout the home. At Christmas time, the classic silver, gold and pearl coastal decorations are neatly arranged to bring back memories of their childhoods.

E    Diner at Rabbit Hill
290 Rabbitt Hill Road

The “Diner at Rabbit Hill” is the creation of Mr. Wayne Jackson, a local home builder and developer. In searching for a property on which to build a new home, he found an older home with a large outbuilding on 3 acres of land surrounded with majestic oak trees. After renovating the home and adding to the outbuilding structure, he envisioned decorating it as a bright and cheerful place in which to entertain family and friends. Thus, the “Rabbit Hill Diner” was born.
Following a theme of a 1950s diner, it is decorated with red and white booths and tables and chairs. The diner has been used for among other things, wedding receptions, church gatherings, karaoke parties, company and children’s parties. It has a projection room, a full kitchen and bathroom, a karaoke setup, and will hold 150 people. This unique building is a great addition to this year’s tour! Come and enjoy.

F    Home of Chris & Jolene Lea
460 River Bend Road

460 River Bend Rd is a multi-generational home that welcomes visitors and family alike. The front of the home has welcoming arms to embrace her guests and the rear of the home overlooks the beautiful Ogeechee River. The modern outline of the home masks the old world interior. This home has five generous bedrooms with 4.5 baths, 2 home offices, a gym, and a space affectionately called the man cave. The dock house offers exceptional views of the river at dawn and dusk and a place for quiet retreat (and fishing).

G    Home of Alan & Angie Mock
197 Briarwood Lane

Built in 2007, the beautiful home of Alan and Angie Mock sits amongst the gorgeous oak trees on the great Ogeechee River in the Briarwood Subdivision. The classic architecture of their home evokes family living reminiscent of times past. With a stunning balcony overlooking the marshes of the old antebellum rice plantations, a side porch with an outdoor fire place to enjoy the brisk river breezes, and the modern luxury of a fabulous media room, this home exudes Southern comfort and hospitality from every corner.
Alan and Angie along with children, Summer and Michael and their two dogs, Hunter and Lily, found Richmond Hill to be the perfect place to call home before building their residence. As with many residents, the Mock family fell in love with the lifestyle of Richmond Hill and made sure to encompass those feelings in every part of their home.

H    Home of Allen & Donnie Lancaster
Buckhead North Subdivision
320 Shadow Moss

Built in 2005 by TDS Custom Homes, and designed by the homeowners along with architect Monica Mastrianni, this custom-built two-story home features 10 foot ceilings and crown molding, with 4 bedrooms and 4½ baths. The spacious master bedroom connects to a bath area with a walk-in shower and deep bath tub for relaxing. A second walk-in shower off the guest bedrooms features a steam sauna for additional relaxation after a long day. A spacious dining room provides plenty of room for family gatherings. The upstairs features an open and spacious bonus room with a bar area and a sitting deck leading out under the oak trees in front of the house. Roofing slate was used for the first floor covering. Most of the window treatments and bedding in the home were designed and made by Donnie. There is also a three car detached garage with a covered walkway and spacious porches around the home.

Halloween Losers

This year’s Halloween was a good one. A print-out from the computer and a few stitches later, I had changed some black t-shirts of Keegan’s into our costume of Team Black from The Biggest Loser. It was a definite boost to the ego to walk through Toluca Lake and have people chuckle and tell us how great we looked and to keep up the good work. If you’re feeling down on your body image, I can tell you from firsthand experience that pretending you’ve lost 200 lbs. is a simple and effective way to feel like a million bucks.

We enjoyed a truly unique Hollywood experience when we visited Steve Carell‘s home along with a slew of other trick-or-treaters. Waiting in line along with a bunch of tiny Snow Whites and Spider-Men, we introduced ourselves as big fans of The Office and I joked that we really couldn’t accept any candy.

After all the progress we’ve made, the last thing we wanted was to face the wrath of Jillian at next week’s weigh-in.
