Last Night’s Cupcakes

Last Night's Cupcakes

Robbie came over for some Friday night dinner and chit chat. Of course, he surprised me by bringing over a half dozen GORGEOUS cupcakes he’d purchased at Sprinkles on the way. From the top right hand corner going clockwise, we have red velvet, chocolate vanilla, vanilla vanilla, lemon coconut, cinnamon and chai.

Of course, we ended up inhaling these decadent confections over a lively viewing of Obsession. You know a movie’s gonna be a classic when it’s named after a brand of perfume.

And as I always do when I have friends over, the evening devolved into me forcing Robbie to watch my favorite YouTube video clips of all time before he nearly passed out. Hope everyone else’s Friday night was as exciting!

Red Velvet Eyeball Cupcakes

This is a haphazard attempt to dress up some red velvet cupcakes as some bloodshot eyeballs for Halloween.

They’re delicious, but I feel weird eating them while they’re watching me.

One of these days, I’ll probably tire of baking cupcakes. Until then, I’ll just keep on taking pictures.

And eating them.

Cupcakes & Kris Jones Are Saving the Day!

chocolate cupcake1 Cupcakes & Kris Jones Are Saving the Day!What a difference a day makes.

So, I was lamenting my fundraising woes yesterday and within a few hours, was feeling more optimistic about my ability to make it to my goal of raising $3,200 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and since I last posted, I have earned 5% more toward my goal. Woo hoo! I have one Ms. Kris Jones to thank for that!

Once she saw that I was having trouble finding customers for my Cupcakes for Cancer idea, she promptly messaged me on Facebook to I should call her the following day.

So I emailed her today around 2 p.m. to find out if it was a good time to call. The response I received informed me that everyone was expecting cupcakes since breakfast and to hurry up and bring some because the natives were getting restless! Quickly, I whipped up a batch of chocolate and scooted out the door bearing red velvet and chocolate chocolate cupcakes to Warner Bros.

All in all, I took in $170 in donations—both on and offline—as a result of Kris’ efforts—and have orders to return tomorrow. The tide is turning! I can’t thank Kris and her lovely co-workers enough for their generosity and healthy appetites. The only way I can think of to express my appreciation is to come back tomorrow…and hopefully a few more times after that.

STATUS: $600 out of $3,200 raised by December 30, 2009.

Memorial Day Chocolate Cupcakes

To represent all the military graveyards my parents took me and my sisters to all over Europe when we were growing up, I baked a delicious batch of chocolate frosted cupcakes and decorated them with little white chocolate crosses. Nostalgic, appropriate and yummy, they were a huge hit at the bbq.

Here’s the recipe—it’s definitely a keeper. To save time, I just used my trusty Duncan Hines whipped chocolate frosting.

The Red Velvet Addiction Continues

red velvet cupcake The Red Velvet Addiction Continues

I get such a kick out of feeding my friends. I can’t tell if it’s a Latin thing, a Southern thing or just the way I was brought up, but there’s something so satisfying about brightening up someone’s day with a little homemade something-or-other. Because of this, I’ve learned that I’m not really friends with finicky eaters. Finicky eaters are usually finicky people, I’ve found.

Also, now that I feel more comfortable with this recipe for Red Velvet Cupcakes, I’ve decided to try and kick the aesthetics up a notch with some red-dyed sugar sprinkled on top of the frosting for fancy effect. And it must have  worked because when I brought these cupcakes over to a friend’s place for dinner, it was mistakenly assumed that they were store bought.

Cupcake Break

I’m realizing that this site is running the risk of turning into straight food porn, with a particular emphasis on baked goods, but I felt like this amazing cupcake from Aroma on Tujunga in Studio City was too good not to share. It was an April Fool’s Day indulgence and much-needed in the wake of some bad news.
