westfield dr hike lisa Team in Training: Top o the Mountain to YaSomehow, I managed to drag myself out of bed 5:45 on Sunday morning to go for a seven and a half mile run in the Santa Monica Mountains as part of my Team in Training activities. I’ve been AWOL at the weekly runs for the past three weeks, due to two scheduling conflicts and one incident involving the snooze button—one which I’d rather not discuss in further detail as it is very embarrassing and pretty self-explanatory.

I arrived to the meeting point for our trail run at 7 a.m. and was greeted by the welcome sight of my fellow Team in Training runners and was immediately happy that I had successfully wrangled my way out of my cozy covers. Before we took off running, we received a quick briefing about nutrition during the day of our big race, followed by a chat with one of our Team in Training assistant coaches, Javier.

He talked about his mother living on the other side of the country with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, which I learned is incurable at this time. He became emotional discussing her prognosis and if someone would have noticed me tearing up, I would have simply blamed my allergies, which have been plaguing me with watery eyes lately.

After Javier finished explaining how running with Team in Training had helped him to cope with his mother’s illness and that he had seen firsthand what the donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society were helping people do, my anxiety about the fundraising aspect of my half-marathon in January diminished.

The least I can do is put aside my sheepishness about asking people to give to the cause and continue to come up with creative ways to provide incentives for people to pledge funds.

Currently, I’m giving out cupcakes to Los Angeles-based pledges from now until October 31st. Click here to donate, or email me at timmonslisa@gmail.com for more information.

sunset blvd golden hour early bird 00 Look out Worm, Ive Got My Eye on You

Continuing the theme of making changes to welcome the coming of a new year, I’m going to see if I can’t turn myself into an early bird in the upcoming weeks. For a couple of months when I was heavy into the running, I was getting up at the crack of dawn to meet up with my running buddy and neighbor Mauricio to make the trek up to Bronson Canyon.

Now, I’ve got a new go-to canyon and a new running buddy because Mauricio lives too far away at this point. However, one of the benefits of having a live-in boyfriend is getting to drag him into my self-improvement ventures.

That said, it’s a shame I can’t figure out a way to get him to aid me in my quest to stop biting my nails. Well, “aid” in a way that doesn’t include him swatting my hand any time he catches me doing it, which is what he does now.

In the face of this new undertaking, coffee will be key. Of course, that probably means a few months from now, I’ll be writing a post entitled, “Chasing the Caffeine Dragon.”

Apropos of nothing in particular, here are some pictures of a Sunset Boulevard at the “Golden Hour.”

Everybody Loves Hiking

fryman canyon small Everybody Loves HikingOn Saturday, for the first time in a very long time, I had the time and motivation to leave the house and do what I’m constantly being advised to do, which is, “Take a hike!”

So here is the view of Fryman Canyon heading uphill via the camera on my phone. A few minutes before I took this picture, I saw Ray Romano walking downhill with a friend.

See? Even if I try to avoid celebrity, I end up somehow walking right into it. But to make up for it, there’s a hell of a view of Los Angeles once you get up to the top.

At my last apartment, I was close enough to Bronson Canyon to be able to run there directly from my house. Back when my running partner Mauricio and I were regularly getting up early to go for jogs there, we would get just high enough (altitude-wise, of course) so we could look down on Hollywood and yell at the smog, traffic, studios and executives, “You shall not conquer me!”

I think it’s about time I reintigrated that activity back into my daily routine, lest L.A. think it’s starting to get the best of me.
